Modern Heirlooms – Meet Jade Trau

Can a young designer make pieces that still feel timeless? When that designer is a sixth-generation diamantaire with family roots embedded deep in the jewelry world, the answer is unequivocally, yes. Hailing from New York City, Jade Lustig has built a collection that expertly balances her past and her present. Unlike designers who deal exclusively in the glitz and glam of yesteryear, Jade draws inspiration equally from her life as a young wife and mother of twin boys. The result is a collection that feels fresh, modern and accessible.

How to Keep Your Timepiece Timeless

A mechanical timepiece transcends simply telling the time; it’s living proof of a master craftsman’s dedication and ingenuity. Whether you can see the inner machinations at work or you rely on the subtle feel of microscopic engineering at work as it ticks gently against your wrist, it’s beautifully apparent that amazing things are happening just under the dial. Taken care of, your mechanical timepiece will stay true through every milestone you reach in your life (as well as those of your children and their children). The basic machinations of a timepiece have changed little for hundreds of years; its efficiency was perfected long ago. The force that drives the second, minute and hour hands comes from the simple unwinding of a tightly coiled flat spring, called the mainspring. When you wind your watch, you are increasing the tension on that spring, which then releases slowly over the course of the day. If worn regularly, automatic timepieces will be kept wound on their own without you needing to hand wind. However if your timepiece does stop due to inactivity, it’s important to hand wind it using the crown to bring it back to full power. Modern timepieces have made significant advances to mitigate the effects of water, shock, and magnetism, but some care on your end can further keep these issues from becoming a problem. Though most mechanical timepieces are rated at least 3 bars of water resistance, take care not to bring your watch in the pool every morning if it only meets those minimum requirements. If you do spend significant time in the water, it’s a good idea to have your timepiece’s water resistance tested once every year or so. With all of the gadgets and technology surrounding us, it can be hard to keep your wrist away from all the magnets hidden in our tech. Timepiece companies have been making huge progress in keeping the effect of magnets at bay, but if you notice your timepiece is beginning to run fast or slow, it may have gotten too close for comfort. Luckily demagnetizing your timepiece is an easy fix that takes us only a few minutes. If for whatever reason you feel your timepiece isn’t working as well as you were expecting, or simply need a little advice to keep your watch looking as beautiful as the day you first put it on, O.C. Tanner employs a full-time, WOSTEP-certified horologist to answer your questions or bring your watch back up to speed.
